Open Internet Nepal Condemns Violence Against Gen Z Protesters

We strongly condemn the oppressive actions taken by the Nepal government against the protest led by Gen Z on 8 September, 2025.

The violent suppression of young voices who bravely advocated for digital freedom, justice, accountability, and a more prosperous future constitutes a severe violation of fundamental human rights and democratic freedom. The use of force against unarmed youth demanding change is not only unacceptable but also a betrayal of Nepal’s democratic principles and constitutional guarantees of freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, and freedom of dissent.

By silencing the very generation that holds the promise of tomorrow, the government demonstrated a profound fear of its own citizens. We urge all human rights defenders, international organizations, and the global community to stand in solidarity with Nepal’s youth.

Today’s crackdown extends beyond Gen Z; it represents an assault on the very fabric of democracy in Nepal. The courage of our young citizens demands nationwide as well as international support and solidarity, not silence!!!

Following the atrocity, Internet Society Nepal Chapter, standing in solidarity with its allies in the Digital Freedom Coalition, has joined 22 organizations in urging the Government of Nepal to immediately reconsider the implications of a ban on social media and ensure restoration of digital rights and democratic freedoms.

This has hit our nerves and it is intolerable

We demand justice. We demand change. We demand peace.

We stand with the youths of Nepal.
